Kanchenjunga plus Drohmo Ri Trekking is an excellent combination of off-the-beaten-path trekking with an expedition opportunity above 6,000 m in the Kanchenjunga region of Nepal. This is almost a month-long trekking on which we will be stepping to the North and South Base Camp of the world’s third-highest mountain, Mt. Kanchenjunga. It is the 3rd highest Himalaya in the world after Everest and K2 standing tall at an altitude of 8,586 meters above sea level which was often renowned as the world’s tallest peak before proper measuring instruments were discovered. Along with that, we will get to explore a virgin trail full of adrenaline and excitement climbing the Drohmo Ri. Here, the Drohmo Ri (6,100m) is often confused with the Drohmo Peak which sits higher at the elevation of 6,881m.
Drohmo Peak and Drohmo Ri
The Drohmo Ri (6,100m) is often confused with the Drohmo Peak which sits higher at the elevation of 6,881m. The Drohmo Peak Climbing is an optional program in this package which is open only for expeditions and is not like the other trekking peaks in Nepal. Climbing the Drohmo Peak will cost you USD 2,000.00 as the Government Royalty Fee and you will be allowed to ascend the peak only if you are accompanied by a Liason Officer.
Overview of Kanchenjunga plus Drohmo Ri Trekking
The Kanchenjunga Trek with Drohmo Ri allows us to explore the marvelous vistas of the Kanchenjunga Himalayas along with the lifestyle and culture of people in the remote areas of Nepal. While on the other hand, herbs, vegetation, flora and fauna, and mystical nature are obviously added merit of this trekking. Many rare and endangered species like Musk Deer, Snow Leopard, Red Panda, etc. can be spotted during our trekking.
The journey begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur from where a short drive up to Birtamode before we get to Taplejung the next day. The real trekking begins from our hike towards Mitlung from Taplejung and follows the trail until we reach Pang Pema, the North Base Camp of Kanchenjunga at the elevation of 5,200m. And the following day, we step at the Drohmo Ri and get back to Pang Pema with the remarkable experience of our lifetime. With the close-up view of many surrounding peaks including Kanchenjunga itself, the climb is worth the effort. Mt. Kumbha Karna(7,711m.), Mt. Kanchenjunga(8586m.), Mt. Yalung Kag(8,055m.), Nepal peak(7,157m.), Kirat Chunli(7,362m.), and many other neighboring peaks can be sighted so well. If you are also planning to ascend the Drohmo Peak, your journey will continue further for the expedition from here with more challenges and of course, better vistas. Our journey continues further towards the South Base Camp of Kanchenjunga aka Yalung Base Camp.
End of the journey
After spending about a month in the Himalayas we will be returning to Birtamode and then to Kathmandu where we will rest, relax and share the experience. The Kanchenjunga plus Drohmo Ri Trek is best suited for those who have enough time to be spent in the Himalayas and are physically and mentally sound enough to tackle the challenges along the way. Also, for the climbing part, it is highly preferred to have previous climbing experience and knowledge of equipment usage. Regarding the time frame, the autumn or spring season would be the best for the perfect enjoyment of this trek. It is a lodge plus camping trek so good weather is the most.
